Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup remain uncertain as the Super Eagles wait for FIFA to rule on their complaint against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

The dispute comes after Nigeria lost a tense African playoff final in a penalty shootout.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed an official complaint, claiming DR Congo used players who were not eligible for the match, including Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Fans, players, and officials are now anxiously waiting, with less than three weeks to the next international match window.

Football analyst Mamadou Gaye urged Nigerians to remain patient. Speaking on the SuperSport Soccer Africa programme, he said, “FIFA often takes time to make these decisions.

Look at what happened with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana they lost three points because of an ineligible player, and the ruling came just before the final group matches. Nigeria should stay calm and wait for the outcome.”

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles are preparing for friendly matches against Iran and Jordan, two other World Cup-bound teams, scheduled for next month.

Gaye emphasized that the team’s case should continue as planned, noting that any team dissatisfied with FIFA’s ruling can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

If FIFA rules in favor of DR Congo, the team will face the winner of the playoff between New Caledonia and Jamaica, with the winner of that match earning a place in the 2026 World Cup.

As the nation waits, Nigerian fans are holding onto hope that a fair ruling could restore the Super Eagles’ chance to compete on football’s biggest stage.

In the meantime, the team continues training and preparing for upcoming challenges, determined to remain ready regardless of FIFA’s decision.
