Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi won the bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday after finishing third in a closely contested race held in heavy rain.

Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme won the gold medal with a new Commonwealth Games record of 9.83 seconds, while Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy claimed the silver medal.

Ajayi delivered a strong performance despite the difficult weather conditions to earn Nigeria’s first medal in the men’s 100 metres at this year’s Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Eseme’s winning time broke the previous Commonwealth Games record set by Trinidad and Tobago’s Ato Boldon 28 years ago in Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking after the race, the 32 year old Cameroonian said he was surprised by his performance.

“That was a crazy race. I’m surprised at the time. I didn’t want the weather to be an excuse because we all competed under the same conditions,” Eseme said.

Ajayi’s bronze medal further increased Nigeria’s medal tally at the Games and marked an impressive outing for the Nigerian sprinter in one of athletics’ biggest events.

The race was held in torrential rain, making conditions difficult for all the athletes, but Eseme produced a dominant run to take gold while Ajayi held on to finish third.
