Team Nigeria will begin its athletics campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday, July 27, with several athletes aiming to qualify for the next rounds and compete for medals.
The day’s events will start with the men’s 100m first round at 10:10 a.m. Nigerian sprinter Favour Ashe will compete in Heat 1 from Lane 4. Ashe, who has a season’s best of 9.93 seconds, is expected to be one of the favourites to advance.
Later in the event, Fakorede Adekalu will run in Heat 10 from Lane 3. He has recorded a season’s best of 9.98 seconds and will also be hoping to qualify for the next round.
At 11:40 a.m., Oyesade Olatoye will compete in the women’s hammer throw qualification. She has a season’s best throw of 70.46 metres and will be looking to secure a place in the final.
The morning session will end with the women’s 100m first round at 12:00 noon. Teenage sprinter Miracle Ezechukwu will compete in Heat 8 from Lane 8. She has a season’s best of 11.15 seconds and hopes to progress to the next stage.
In the evening, Nigeria will have an early medal opportunity when Eucharia Iyiazi competes in the women’s F57 shot put final at 7:05 p.m.
The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, expressed confidence in the team ahead of the competition. He said Nigeria has assembled one of its strongest athletics teams in recent years.
Okowa also praised the commitment shown by the country’s top athletes, saying their participation reflects their dedication to representing Nigeria at major international competitions.
With a mix of experienced athletes and promising young talents, Team Nigeria will be hoping to make a strong start as athletics begins at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
