The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has withdrawn a controversial anti-sexual harassment advisory that was issued to female students after it attracted widespread criticism on social media.
In a statement released on Monday, the university’s Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the advisory did not reflect the institution’s values. She also stressed that UNILAG has a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment.
The controversy began after a roll-up banner produced by the Student Affairs Division was displayed on campus. The banner advised female students to avoid sexual harassment and rape by following certain precautions.
Among the messages on the banner were: “Do not shake hands anyhow with any man,” “Do not dress to kill,” and “Do not mingle carelessly with men.”
It also advised female students not to accept gifts from men, avoid staying alone with a man in a secluded place, and not to watch pornographic content.
The advisory sparked public backlash, with many people accusing the university of blaming potential victims instead of focusing on those who commit sexual harassment.
Following the criticism, the university management withdrew the publication and acknowledged the concerns raised by members of the public.
UNILAG reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment for all students. The university also said it remains firmly committed to preventing and addressing all forms of sexual harassment within the institution.
