Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has reacted to Nigeria’s loss to Morocco in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles were beaten 4–2 on penalties by the host nation after both teams played out a tense and exciting 120 minutes on Wednesday night.
Despite several chances and strong performances from the Nigerian players, the match ended without a winner in regulation and extra time, leading to a penalty shootout that favoured Morocco.
Reacting to the result, Obi took to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account early Thursday to praise the Super Eagles for their determination and fighting spirit. He said the team gave their best and never stopped believing, even in the face of pressure from the home crowd.
According to Obi, the Super Eagles displayed courage, discipline, and quality football throughout the match, making Nigerians proud despite the painful defeat. He stressed that losing on penalties does not take away from the team’s impressive performance in the tournament.
He also reminded the players that their AFCON journey is not yet over, urging them to stay focused as they prepare for the third-place match.
“Dearest gallant Super Eagles, it was a battle well fought and your heads should not be bowed,” Obi wrote. “You showed great character and strength against all odds. Keep your heads high. There is another stage ahead—let’s go and win that medal. You have done well and the nation is proud of you.”
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place match as they aim to finish the tournament on a strong note.
