Neville spoke after United defeated Arsenal 3–2 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. He praised Carrick for the work he has done during a difficult period for the club. Carrick, a former midfielder, took over as interim head coach during a challenging time, and Neville believes he has handled the pressure well.
According to Neville, Carrick is calm, humble, and level-headed. He does not overreact in good or bad situations. This, Neville said, makes him the right person to steady the team and help players regain confidence.
Neville explained that many people in football believed success for Carrick would mean guiding Manchester United through the season, lifting the mood of players and fans, and improving the team’s performances. If he does this, then he should pass the leadership to someone with more experience.
Neville added that Manchester United have often made emotional decisions over the past decade, but the recent approach has been more stable. He praised the team for playing with intensity, energy, and quality in recent games, saying it reminded him of how the club used to perform.
He believes that United should aim to hire a top-level manager next season, such as Thomas Tuchel or Carlo Ancelotti. According to Neville, Carrick’s main role now is to manage the team professionally until the end of the season, while preparing for the transition to a permanent, experienced coach.
Neville concluded by saying that Carrick understands his role. He knows that his job is temporary, and he has shown that he can handle the responsibilities calmly, while giving the team a chance to improve and succeed before a more experienced manager takes over.
