A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Taminu Turaki, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.

The meeting comes amid growing speculation over who will emerge as the party’s presidential candidate for the next election. Although the purpose of the meeting was not immediately disclosed, it has generated fresh interest because of Jonathan’s name being linked with the race.

The Turaki-led faction had earlier announced Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election. However, the former president was not present when the nomination was formally ratified by members of the faction.

Despite the announcement, Jonathan has not publicly declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027. He has also not confirmed whether he has accepted the nomination by the faction.

On May 7, Jonathan said he would consult widely before making a final decision on whether to seek another term as president. His remarks came after a group of supporters visited his Abuja office and appealed to him to join the 2027 presidential race.

Since making that statement, the former president has remained silent on the issue and has not addressed the media about his political plans.

As of the time this report was filed, details of Friday’s meeting between the PDP faction and Jonathan had not been made public.

It is also unclear what was discussed during the meeting or whether it was connected to preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Political observers are expected to keep a close watch on any further developments, as Jonathan’s next move could influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
