The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says a letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu does not mean the U.S. is supporting the Tinubu administration.
In a statement on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said letters between world leaders are a normal part of diplomatic relations and should not be seen as an endorsement of any government.
The ADC accused the Presidency of celebrating the letter instead of focusing on Nigeria’s security and economic problems.
The party said many Nigerians are still facing insecurity, kidnapping and violent attacks. It pointed to the continued captivity of women and children in parts of Borno and Kaiama in Kwara State, as well as attacks in Benue and other parts of the country.
According to the ADC, the real test of any government is the quality of life of its citizens, not praise or communication from foreign leaders.
The party also referred to the United States travel advisory, which warns its citizens against travelling to some parts of Nigeria because of terrorism, kidnapping, crime and civil unrest.
It questioned why the Presidency would present Trump’s letter as an endorsement while the U.S. still considers several Nigerian states unsafe for travel.
The ADC said the letter was simply a routine exchange between two presidents and should not be interpreted as an assessment of President Tinubu’s performance.
The party urged the Federal Government to concentrate on improving security, fixing the economy and addressing the challenges facing Nigerians instead of celebrating diplomatic correspondence.
It added that Nigerians would judge the Tinubu administration by its performance and its ability to improve their lives ahead of the 2027 general elections.
