The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has advised farmers across the country to take advantage of the increasing rainfall in June by intensifying planting activities. The agency also urged them to protect their farms from flooding, pests, and crop diseases.
In its June 2026 Weather Outlook, NiMet said the rainy season has now fully started in many northern states, creating favourable conditions for farming.
The agency encouraged farmers in Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Yobe, and Borno states to begin planting according to the rainfall pattern in their areas.
NiMet predicted above-normal rainfall in several parts of the country, including the South-West, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, parts of Plateau and Kaduna states, Yobe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
While the increased rainfall is expected to support crop growth, the agency warned that it could also lead to flooding in low-lying communities and farmlands.
Farmers were advised to clear drainage channels around their farms to prevent waterlogging and reduce crop losses.
NiMet also said temperatures are likely to be lower than in previous months because of increased cloud cover and rainfall. This could help reduce heat stress on crops, livestock, and farmers.
According to the agency, farmers should begin planting activities in line with local rainfall conditions and follow NiMet’s agrometeorological advisories. Proper drainage should also be maintained to minimise waterlogging and crop damage.
Livestock farmers were advised to keep animal shelters dry and clean to prevent disease outbreaks that are common during the rainy season.
NiMet further urged farmers to regularly monitor their farms for signs of waterlogging, pests, and disease outbreaks, while ensuring proper drainage around both farmlands and livestock facilities.
The agency added that June is expected to bring widespread rainfall, more thunderstorms, cooler weather, and a higher risk of flooding in some areas. It therefore advised farmers and communities to stay alert and follow weather updates throughout the season.
