The Lagos State Government has allocated land to 98 communities in the Lekki area as compensation for land earlier acquired for development projects.
The compensation covers more than 16,300 hectares of land taken from Ito Omu and other neighbouring communities through the New Towns Development Authority (NTDA). The government said the land was acquired to support housing projects and other public development initiatives.
Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu presented the allocation letters to leaders of the affected communities during a ceremony held at the Ito Omu Link Bridge in Sangotedo.
Some of the benefiting communities include Orofun, Agadangba, Oko Keji, Okun Abe, Abegede, Idi Ori, Anikansogbo, Anwoye Oke, Anwoye Ebute, Ladaba Ebute, Idi Afon, Oguntedo, Megun, Isan, Ipesu, Arapagi Lotu, Ibon, Ito Omu, Ladaba, Dongo, Oregun, Ladega and Ladaba Oke Odo, among others.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo Olu said the government wants the growth of Ito Omu and nearby communities to be carefully planned to ensure long term development that benefits residents.
He explained that the plan is aimed at creating communities where people can live comfortably, run successful businesses and enjoy improved infrastructure for many years.
According to the governor, Lagos cannot continue to grow through unplanned expansion. He said development must be guided by proper planning, good infrastructure, secure communities and opportunities that improve the lives of residents.
Sanwo Olu said the development plan for Ito Omu and surrounding communities will properly combine residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and recreational areas. He added that this approach will make it easier to provide infrastructure, attract investment and improve the quality of life for residents.
He also said his administration is committed to ensuring that development is fair and inclusive while protecting the history and identity of the affected communities.
The governor assured residents that the allocation letters mark the beginning of a new phase of development. He said the government will continue to improve road networks, drainage systems and other public infrastructure in the area.
He also revealed plans to build the proposed Ito Omu Waterfront Jetty, which is expected to improve transportation, strengthen connectivity and create more economic opportunities for the communities.
Speaking on behalf of the 98 communities, the Onibeju of Ibeju Lekki, Oba Razak Olasunkanmi, thanked the state government for the initiative. He appealed for the development of both residential and commercial facilities in the new town to improve links between the communities.
The traditional ruler also called on the Lagos State Government to establish a technical college in the Ibeju Lekki area to provide vocational education and better opportunities for young people.
