CJN orders Nigerian lawyers to stop using ‘Barrister’ as official title
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed lawyers across the country to stop using the title “Barrister” before their names in all official dealings connected with the Supreme Court.
The directive was contained in an official memo issued on Friday, July 31, and signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi. The memo was addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and other lawyers who carry out official duties within the judicial system.
According to the memo, the Chief Justice said the use of the title “Barrister” as a prefix to names is inappropriate and does not reflect the standard of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court.
She explained that official communications should follow acceptable professional practices and maintain a uniform style across the judiciary.
As a result, all lawyers and court officials affected by the directive have been instructed to immediately stop using the title before their names in official correspondence, court records, legal documents, identity cards, letterheads, case files, and every other official engagement connected with the Supreme Court.
The memo also directed heads of departments and unit leaders to ensure that the instruction is fully implemented. They have been asked to monitor compliance among officers under their supervision and make sure the directive is strictly followed.
The order takes immediate effect, meaning all affected officials are expected to comply without delay. Any future official communication or document linked to the Supreme Court is expected to reflect the new directive.
The move is aimed at strengthening professionalism, promoting consistency in official records, and maintaining the high standards expected in Nigeria’s highest court.
By removing the use of the title “Barrister” as a prefix in official engagements, the Supreme Court hopes to ensure greater uniformity in the way legal practitioners are identified in court-related documents and communications.
