As preparations begin for the 2027 governorship election, political activities in Lagos State are gradually increasing.

This follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, asking political appointees who want to contest elections to resign on or before March 31. The order has led to more consultations and political discussions across the state.

Within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), many party members and observers believe the governorship ticket may be zoned to Lagos East Senatorial District.

Because of this, several politicians from that area are already being mentioned as possible candidates. They include former Lagos governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Minister of State for Health Tunji Alausa, and House of Representatives member Jimi Benson.
Others being discussed are Hakeem Muri Okunola and former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

Although the APC has not officially announced any zoning decision, talks are ongoing. There are also reports that the Lagos State Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa may play a key role in the political arrangements, possibly moving to the Senate to represent Lagos West.

Deputy governor position may go to Lagos West
Attention is also on the deputy governorship position. Many believe it may be given to Lagos West to balance power in the state.

This has led to increased lobbying, especially from leaders in Badagry and other areas in the district.

They argue that Lagos West is the largest and deserves stronger representation.
Groups within the APC, such as Justice Forum and Mandate, are said to be involved in these discussions.
Some names being mentioned for deputy governor include:
Jumoke Oduwole
Ramota Hassan-Ijaiye
Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun
Prince Lanre Sanusi
Ayodele Adewale
Others include Samuel Ajose and Abdul-Azeez Adeniran.

In Badagry, there are also calls for someone from the area, with Prince Wale Oluwa gaining attention in discussions.
Key factors that may decide candidates
Political analysts say several factors will influence who eventually gets the tickets.

These include:
Religion: Some want a Muslim governor to succeed current governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is a Christian.
Indigene representation: There are increasing calls for more indigenous Lagosians in leadership.
Power balance: One suggestion is:
Lagos East → Governor
Lagos Central → Deputy Governor
Lagos West → Speaker of the House
Conclusion
Consultations are still ongoing within the APC.

In the coming months, more alliances and political moves are expected as aspirants position themselves ahead of the party’s final decision for the 2027 Lagos governorship election.
