Nigeria’s Super Eagles have qualified for the final stage of the ongoing African Cup of Nation, AFCON, in Cote d’Ivoire.
At full time, both Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana had one goal each.
The match dragged into extra time with none of the teams scoring.
In the penalty shootout that ensued, the Super Eagles scored four goals while South Africa ended up with two goals.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali saved two of the penalty kicks by South Africa.
The first half of the match ended goalless.
However, in the second half, the Super Eagles got its goal via a penalty kick taken by William Troost-Ekong.
The penalty was awarded in favour of Nigeria following a foul by South Africa on Victor Osimhen in the 18 yard box.
South Africa later had its turn when one of its players was fouled against in Nigeria’s 18 yard box.
The penalty was converted into a goal, leaving the score line 1 – 1.
A goal by Osimhen earlier was ruled out by the referee following a foul.
