The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold its national convention in Abuja today, according to the party’s national chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas.
A major part of the convention will be the formation of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which will manage the party’s activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NEC is also expected to oversee the process that will lead to the emergence of the party’s presidential candidate.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is believed to be the leading aspirant for the NDC presidential ticket, while former Rabiu Kwankwaso is being considered as a possible running mate.
Party insiders said the convention will demonstrate the party’s growing influence and confirm ongoing political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
In recent weeks, the party has witnessed several defections and meetings involving key opposition figures, including Obi and Kwankwaso.
Sources within the party dismissed rumours that Kwankwaso plans to contest against Obi for the NDC presidential ticket.
They described the reports as false and aimed at creating confusion among opposition parties.
One source described the convention as an important event, saying the number of new members and political consultations had surpassed expectations.
According to the source, many politicians now see the NDC as an attractive platform ahead of the next election.
The source also denied claims that Kwankwaso had demanded the presidential ticket instead of serving as Obi’s running mate. He explained that discussions on zoning and party positions had not yet started.
“There is no such thing,” the source said, adding that many rumours were being spread to weaken the opposition.
The party also confirmed that it has not zoned the presidency to any region for the 2027 election.
Another source said the NDC is still updating its membership register because many new people are joining the party. The registration process remains open ahead of the submission of party records to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The source also denied claims that names were being removed from the party register.
The convention is expected to attract delegates and political stakeholders from across Nigeria and may provide clearer direction on opposition coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections.
