The House of Representatives has taken a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the late musical talent, Mohbad, by summoning the renowned artist Naira Marley, as well as Mohbad’s manager, Jiggy Adeoye.

The summons, orchestrated by the Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance, is scheduled for October 3, aiming to delve into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s works and ensure proper recognition of his artistic contributions.
Following the tragic demise of Mohbad, a former signee of Naira Marley’s record label, concerns regarding the rights and royalties owed to the late musician have emerged as a crucial focus for the House.
The motion to address these concerns was put forth by Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos), emphasizing the need for a thorough review of existing laws governing the entertainment industry and copyright practices. Rep. Benson highlighted the prevalent issue of artists being subject to unfavorable contractual agreements within the industry.
During the recent plenary session on September 26, lawmakers expressed their unwavering commitment to securing rightful compensation and royalties for Mohbad’s musical legacy. Additionally, the House has pledged to closely monitor the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely passing, ensuring transparency in the allocation of royalties attributed to his artistic endeavors.

In a formal summons dated October 26, signed by the Committee’s Clerk, Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim, the House officially called upon Naira Marley and Mohbad’s manager to provide crucial insights into the situation. This move aims to guide the committee in formulating potential legislative actions that safeguard the rights and interests of artists within the Nigerian music industry.
The letter was conveyed through the President of the Performing Musicians Associations of Nigeria, underscoring the collaborative efforts between the legislative body and industry stakeholders.
