The Cross River State Government has isolated a Chinese man at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) after he showed symptoms suspected to be COVID-19.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, said the patient is receiving treatment and is being closely monitored.
He explained that the man arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, and later travelled to Calabar on his way to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area. He later developed symptoms at a clinic and was quickly referred to UCTH.
The hospital activated isolation procedures immediately, and the state health team began contact tracing to prevent possible spread.
Health officials said they are working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to manage the situation.
Dr. Ayuk assured residents that the case is under control and asked people to remain calm while the government continues its response.
The World Health Organization (WHO) team in Cross River and the state epidemiologist also confirmed that surveillance systems have been strengthened.
They reminded the public that COVID-19 can cause symptoms like fever, cough, tiredness, and difficulty breathing.
Health authorities advised people to maintain hygiene, wash hands regularly, get vaccinated, wear masks when necessary, and avoid close contact with suspected cases.
They stressed that early detection and quick isolation are important to stop the spread of the disease.
