Simi criticised online after TikToker Mirabel admits rape claim was false
Nigerian singer Simi is facing heavy criticism on social media after a TikToker, Mirabel, admitted that her viral rape allegation was not true.

The issue started on February 18 when Mirabel posted a video on TikTok claiming she had been raped and injured with a blade in her home.

The video quickly went viral and caused anger, sympathy, and heated debates online.
While many people believed her and condemned the alleged attack, others questioned her story and pointed out inconsistencies. Some accused her of seeking attention.

During the controversy, Simi posted on X (formerly Twitter), speaking against rape culture. She urged men to hold other men accountable and questioned why some people felt offended when rapists were called out.

However, her comments led to backlash. Critics accused her of ignoring the issue of false rape allegations. An old tweet from 2016 was also brought back and misinterpreted, leading to more criticism.

A fake apology screenshot circulated online, and some users gave her the nickname “Ikorodu Celine Dion.”
Simi responded by saying sexual violence against women is still widespread and that false accusations should not stop real victims from speaking out.

She said people who lie should face consequences but stressed that her focus was on the larger problem of sexual assault.

Later, social media activist VeryDarkMan said he spoke with Mirabel on the phone. According to him, she admitted that the rape allegation was false and that she created the fake TikTok account involved in the case.

He said Mirabel described herself as an 18-year-old orphan who is struggling with alcohol and codeine addiction. She reportedly asked for help and said she was feeling lost.

VeryDarkMan appealed to Nigerians to forgive her and avoid harsh judgment, noting that mental health challenges are real.

He also said plans were being made to take her to a rehabilitation centre.
Meanwhile, the case has been transferred to Ogun State for further investigation.

The incident has continued to spark strong reactions online, reopening discussions about sexual violence, false accusations, accountability, and mental health.
