FIFA has imposed fines on both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association (CFA) for separate violations that occurred during their 2026 World Cup play-off match played in November 2025.
According to reports, the Nigerian football body was punished after some supporters inside the stadium threw objects onto the pitch during the game.

FIFA stated that this behaviour violated its regulations on maintaining order, discipline, and security during football matches. Because the national federation is responsible for the conduct of its fans at official games, FIFA decided to take disciplinary action against the NFF.
As a result, the Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs for the incident.
The football authorities in DR Congo received a more severe punishment from FIFA after their fans were found using laser pointers and similar electronic devices during the match. Such devices can distract players and officials and are considered dangerous to the fairness of the game.
FIFA explained that the use of these devices goes against Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which clearly prohibits spectators from using objects or technology that could interfere with play or endanger participants.
Due to this violation, the Congolese Football Association was fined 5,000 Swiss Francs, a larger penalty compared to Nigeria’s fine.
FIFA continues to enforce strict rules during international matches to ensure safety, fairness, and proper conduct from teams, officials, and supporters.

Football governing bodies are expected to control the behaviour of their fans and prevent actions that could disrupt games or threaten the safety of players and match officials.
