Two Rivers State lawmakers, Sylvanus Nwankwo (Minority Leader, representing Omuma) and Peter Abbey (representing Degema), have stepped back from their plan to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, they asked the State Assembly to reconsider the impeachment. They said their decision came after advice from elders and community leaders who called for leniency.
They stated, “Rivers State issued a notice of impeachment on Governor Fubara and his Deputy. We appeal to our colleagues to balance justice with mercy and find a way to resolve this matter without impeachment.
We have listened to many calls from elders and leaders, both inside and outside the state, and we urge our colleagues to reconsider and resolve this matter peacefully, even though the governor and his deputy may have violated the Constitution.”
Last Thursday, Governor Fubara and his Deputy were served an impeachment notice over alleged gross misconduct.
