The Supreme Court has chosen to withhold its judgment in the closely-watched appeal concerning the Kano State gubernatorial election. This decision comes after a hearing involving key stakeholders, with a five-member panel of judges, spearheaded by Justice Inyang Okoro, reserving their verdict on Thursday, December 21.
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) have jointly filed an appeal contesting the ruling of the Court of Appeal on November 17.

The said ruling had declared Yusuf Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the victor of the March 26 gubernatorial election in the state.
Central to the NNPP’s appeal is the assertion of inconsistencies in the Certificate of Return (CTC) ruling that nullified Governor Abba Yusuf’s election and simultaneously awarded him N1 million in damages.
Concerns Rise Over Kano Government’s Controversial Appointments
A noteworthy aspect of the appeal is the sustained argument presented by Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose victory was upheld by a three-judge bench presided over by Justice Moore A. Adumein. The tribunal had previously determined that Yusuf, affiliated with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), lacked proper party registration, rendering him ineligible for the gubernatorial race.
The crux of the dispute lies in the court’s jurisdiction over a candidate’s political party membership, a matter fiercely debated throughout the extended hearing before the Supreme Court on Thursday.
