Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has announced that the popular Onitsha Main Market will reopen on Monday, February 2, 2026.

The market was shut down last week by the state government because many traders continued to observe the Monday sit-at-home despite government warnings.

The announcement was made in a press statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor. According to the statement, the closure ordered by the governor will officially end over the weekend, allowing traders to return to their businesses on Monday.

The government made it clear that there is no longer any form of sit-at-home on Mondays in Anambra State.

Traders have therefore been directed to resume normal business activities without fear, as adequate security arrangements have been put in place across the state, especially in major commercial areas like Onitsha.

The statement also reminded civil servants and teachers that the pro rata salary policy is still in effect. This means that any worker who stays away from work on Mondays will not be paid for that day. The government stressed that attendance at work is mandatory.

In addition, parents were warned to ensure their children attend school on Mondays. The government said failure to send children to school could attract sanctions, as schools are expected to operate fully on all weekdays.

Governor Soludo reassured residents that the state government is committed to protecting lives and property. Citizens were encouraged to go about their normal activities and report any security concerns promptly.

Residents were also advised to make use of the emergency number 5111 to report suspicious movements or threats to peace and security.Gov. Solud

The reopening of Onitsha Main Market is expected to bring relief to traders and boost economic activities in the state, as the market is one of the largest commercial hubs in West Africa.
