Police Detain Officer Over Alleged Threat on Social Media

The Anambra State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) after a video surfaced online showing him allegedly threatening to shoot anyone who records him while he is on duty.

The police spokesperson in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said on Friday that the command reviewed the viral video, identified the officer involved, and immediately took him into custody.

According to the police, disciplinary action has already started against the officer in line with the rules and ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

Ikenga also said the officer has undergone drug testing as part of the investigation to help authorities understand the full circumstances of the incident and ensure the process is fair and transparent.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the officer’s alleged behaviour and stressed that the police force does not support misconduct that could damage public trust.

The command assured Nigerians that the result of the disciplinary process would be made public and warned that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate punishment under the law.

Police officers were also reminded to remain professional, stay calm, and treat members of the public respectfully while carrying out their duties, especially at a time when public actions can easily be recorded and shared online.
