The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has condemned an alleged attack on its personnel during a routine traffic enforcement operation in Abuja, describing the incident as a serious threat to public safety and law enforcement.

According to a statement issued by Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the incident occurred at about 3:20 pm on Thursday along the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command axis in Abuja.

The FRSC explained that its patrol team attempted to stop the driver of a Toyota Carina over a suspected traffic violation. However, the driver allegedly ignored the officers’ signal and continued driving in what the agency described as a dangerous manner before he was eventually intercepted in traffic near the command area.

The situation reportedly became tense after officers approached the motorist to carry out routine checks on his vehicle and driver documents.

According to the Corps, the driver became aggressive, verbally attacked the officers and refused to obey lawful instructions despite several attempts by personnel to calm the situation and prevent escalation.

FRSC further alleged that the confrontation worsened when the suspect moved toward officers, produced a pistol and fired two shots within the vicinity of the command.

The agency stated that despite the danger, its personnel acted with restraint, professionalism and tactical discipline to disarm the suspect without causing loss of life. One FRSC marshal reportedly sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Following the confrontation, the suspect was handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at Life Camp Police Station together with the firearm, ammunition components and the vehicle involved.

Preliminary findings, according to FRSC, identified the suspect as an operative of the State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS). The case has since been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed condemned the alleged attack and stressed that no individual, regardless of position or agency affiliation, should obstruct officers carrying out lawful duties.

He also called for stronger discipline and cooperation among security agencies to maintain public safety and national security.
