The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the party’s governorship candidate in the ongoing 2025 Anambra State election, George Moghalu, have both voted and expressed concern over vote buying happening across the state.

Moghalu, who voted at Polling Unit 017, Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi North LGA, told reporters that vote buying was widespread in many communities, with voters allegedly being offered between ₦10,000 and ₦15,000 each.

He said poverty was being used as a tool to influence voters, adding that such acts destroy the fairness of the election.

“If you monetise the process and weaponise poverty, what is free about the election?” he asked.

Peter Obi also cast his vote at Umudimakasi, Agulu Ward 2, Polling Unit 008, where residents and supporters came out to welcome him.

He shared similar concerns about electoral malpractice and warned that vote buying could undermine democracy.

Both leaders called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to make sure the election is free, fair, and credible, and to protect voters from intimidation or manipulation.
