Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has suggested that the Super Eagles may adopt a different tactical approach when they face Tunisia in their crucial Group C match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Speaking to journalists on Friday in Fez, the Malian coach said he is carefully weighing his options ahead of the encounter, describing Tunisia as a strong and experienced side that demands respect.
Chelle explained that he is considering whether to allow Tunisia enjoy more possession and then hit them quickly on the counter, or to stick with Nigeria’s usual style of controlling games through possession.
“I cannot reveal my starting eleven now,” Chelle said. “But in my mind, I have two options. We can allow Tunisia have the ball and attack directly when we win it, or we can continue with our philosophy. Tunisia are a very good team, so we may change something.”
Tight Group C Race
Nigeria go into the match sitting second in Group C with three points after defeating Tanzania 2–1 in their opening game. Tunisia top the group on goal difference following a 3–1 win against Uganda.
With both teams level on points, Saturday’s match is vital. The winner will qualify automatically for the knockout stage and stand a strong chance of finishing top of the group, which could lead to an easier draw in the next round.
As a result, the match is expected to be keenly contested, with both teams fully aware of what is at stake.
Memories of Past Defeat
The fixture also carries emotional weight for Nigeria. Tunisia knocked the Super Eagles out of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon in a surprise round-of-16 defeat.
Nigeria had entered that match as favourites after winning all their group games, but a red card and a single goal from Tunisia ended their tournament abruptly.
That loss remains fresh in the minds of Nigerian players and fans, making this encounter another opportunity to set the record straight.
Ndidi: Focused on the Present
Super Eagles captain, Wilfred Ndidi, acknowledged that the team has spoken about the past defeat but insisted the focus is firmly on the present challenge.
“We talked about it, and we hope it will not happen again,” Ndidi said. “But this is a new match and a new team.”
The midfielder added that the Super Eagles are not under pressure, despite missing out on qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
“There is no pressure,” he said. “This tournament is another opportunity to correct our mistakes. The team is ready and fully prepared.”
Big Test in Fez
Nigeria and Tunisia will meet on Saturday night in Fez, with both teams aiming to take control of Group C.
For Chelle, the match could test his tactical flexibility.
For the Super Eagles, it is a chance to gain momentum, overcome a familiar opponent, and strengthen their push for AFCON glory.
