Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awudumila popularly known as Mr. May D has stirred controversy on X claiming that his colleague, Wizkid, wouldn’t have gotten to his level of success if he didn’t fall out with his former record label, Square Records.

In an intense exchange of words with Wizkid fans, May D stated: “If no be wetin happen between me and Psquare, who be Wiz [Wizkid]? Chai,” insinuating that the fallout was crucial in shaping Wizkid’s rise to fame

The argument started  after May D shared a post praising his fellow colleague Davido. According to the singer, Wizkid’s fans began attacking him in response.

He wrote: “Because I spoke about David, Wizkid boys are attacking me Lmao even Wiz knows I love him, but if y’all come for me I’ll finish all of you and your oga.”

May D rose to stardom in 2011 the same year he got signed to the label Square Records. On 21 August 2012, it was officially announced that May D was no longer in the label, as stated by Premium Times news.

May D released his first single “Soundtrack” with the label Square Records. The music video was released on 12 January 2012 and was directed by Clarence Peters.

He founded an independent record label known as Confam Entertainment in September 2012. In July 2020, the singer announced on his Twitter handle that he had signed with Davido Music Worldwide.

In an episode of ‘Drinks with Killz’ which took place about three years ago, the singer opened up on how things were before his fallout  with Psquare.

Reminiscing on how he started in Square Records, before the fallout, he said: “When I was with Square records, everything was going really smooth. Everything was nice. The songs were good, top-notch, hits. The only thing that happened was when we decided to turn it into a real business, structure it… Then the contract P came up, from there, everything started going left.”

“… I got a show in London, then they gave me a contract which they said they were never going to give me in the beginning when I asked for a contract. They said, “we don’t need your money, how much do you want to be making for us. Do you know how much we make?”. Which is true. They were making so much money”. He further said.
