Fidelity Bank Plc has announced a change in its board leadership, confirming the appointment of Mrs. Amaka Onwughalu as Chairman of its Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2026.

The appointment follows the conclusion of Mr. Mustafa Chike Obi’s tenure as board chairman, which officially ended on December 31, 2025. The bank stated that the transition was carried out in line with its internal governance policies and has been duly reported to regulators, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Exchange Group.

Mr. Chike Obi’s time at the helm was marked by significant financial and strategic progress. During his leadership, Fidelity Bank strengthened its capital base through a highly successful public offer and rights issue that attracted strong investor participation. This development mirrors broader capital market activities in Nigeria, including

GTCO securing ₦10 billion through a private share placement

The bank also fulfilled its Eurobond repayment obligations, reinforcing confidence among local and international investors. These efforts come amid intense sector wide reforms, raising questions about who really benefits from Nigeria’s bank recapitalisation drive.

Another key highlight of the period was Fidelity Bank’s expansion beyond Nigeria, including the establishment of its United Kingdom subsidiary. This reflects a wider trend among Nigerian corporates pursuing offshore growth, similar to recent developments such as Heirs Energies taking a 20 percent stake in Seplat Energy in a 500 million dollar deal.

In addition, the bank recorded steady growth in customer deposits and total assets, alongside major improvements in its digital banking platforms. Fidelity Bank also strengthened its corporate and investment banking services, while improving governance standards, risk management systems, and operational efficiency.

Speaking on his exit, Mr. Mustafa Chike Obi described his tenure as rewarding and expressed confidence in the bank’s future, praising the commitment of the board, management, and staff.

Mrs. Onwughalu brings over 30 years of banking experience to her new role. She joined Fidelity Bank’s board in 2020 and has since played a strategic role in oversight, having chaired several key board committees. Her career includes senior leadership positions at Mainstreet Bank Limited and Skye Bank Plc.

She holds qualifications in Economics, Corporate Governance, and Business Administration, and has completed executive programmes at leading international institutions. Mrs. Onwughalu is also a Fellow of multiple professional bodies and has received recognition for excellence in financial accountability and management.

Commenting on her appointment, Mrs. Onwughalu said she is honoured to lead the board at a pivotal time and looks forward to working with fellow directors and management to deliver sustainable growth and long term value.

Fidelity Bank Plc remains one of Nigeria’s leading commercial deposit money banks, serving more than 9.1 million customers through its extensive branch network and digital banking platforms. The bank operates over 255 business offices across Nigeria and maintains a presence in the United Kingdom through FidBank UK Limited.

The bank’s evolution continues within Nigeria’s broader economic and political environment, where corporate influence and regulation remain central themes, as explored in Dangote’s monopoly power and the political economy of failure.
