Tax Reforms: Peter Obi Advises President Tinubu

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, has called on the National Assembly to involve Nigerians actively in discussions concerning the proposed tax reforms by the federal government.

He emphasized the need for transparency and inclusivity in the process, cautioning against reforms designed solely to benefit the government at the expense of the populace.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi acknowledged the importance of tax reform as a critical issue in governance, asserting that there is nothing inherently wrong with pursuing such an agenda.

However, he stressed the importance of adopting a collaborative approach that includes meaningful public engagement.

“The public must be allowed to engage in a meaningful debate regarding such reforms,” Obi noted.

“A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to contribute their perspectives. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.”

The former Governor of Anambra State highlighted that focusing solely on increasing government revenue without considering the broader impact on the citizenry and the nation’s economic sustainability would be counterproductive.

According to him, tax reform should balance the government’s needs with the welfare of the people and the economic realities of various regions across the country.

“When considering tax reforms and similar issues, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection,” Obi explained.

“We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions.”

Obi further underscored the critical role of trust and legitimacy in the successful implementation of governance policies, including tax reforms.

He warned that reforms, regardless of their good intentions, would face resistance and potential failure if they lacked public trust and legitimacy.

“Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail,” he stated.

Obi’s remarks reflect growing concerns among Nigerians about the government’s approach to tax reform and other economic policies.

His insistence on public participation aligns with calls for greater accountability and transparency in policymaking.

By urging the National Assembly to prioritize dialogue and inclusivity, Obi advocates for reforms that are not only effective in increasing revenue but also fair, sustainable, and widely accepted by the Nigerian populace.
