Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara

The political atmosphere in Rivers State has taken a dramatic turn following the decision of members of the State House of Assembly to formally begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy. The development marks a major escalation in the long-running power struggle that has dominated governance in the oil-rich state for months, raising fresh concerns about political stability, governance continuity, and the future of democratic institutions in Rivers.

The impeachment move was initiated during a plenary session of the Assembly, where lawmakers aligned against the governor introduced and read allegations of gross misconduct against both the governor and his deputy. According to legislative sources, the action followed what the Assembly described as persistent constitutional violations, disregard for legislative authority, and failure to adhere to agreed political and governance frameworks meant to stabilize the state after months of tension.

Although details of the allegations have not been fully made public, lawmakers claim the accusations are rooted in constitutional provisions that allow for the removal of a governor and deputy when their conduct is deemed incompatible with the responsibilities of their offices. The Assembly insists it is acting within its powers and following due process as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.
This latest move cannot be separated from the deep political rift that has engulfed Rivers State since the fallout between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now a powerful federal figure. What began as a quiet disagreement over control of political structures in the state gradually evolved into an open confrontation that split the House of Assembly, paralysed governance, and drew national attention.

Over the past year, Rivers State has witnessed legislative walkouts, parallel sittings, court battles, and federal intervention. At one point, the crisis reached such intensity that governance activities slowed significantly, affecting policy implementation and public service delivery. Residents of the state have repeatedly expressed frustration over the political distractions, particularly at a time when economic pressures and infrastructure challenges require urgent attention.

The impeachment process itself follows a clearly defined constitutional path. After the notice of allegations is formally served on the governor and his deputy, they are entitled to respond within a specified period. If the Assembly is not satisfied with their response, a panel may be constituted to investigate the claims. Only if the panel’s findings support the allegations and are endorsed by at least two-thirds of Assembly members can removal occur.

Supporters of the impeachment argue that the process is necessary to restore legislative authority and uphold constitutional order in the state. They accuse the governor of sidelining the Assembly, making unilateral decisions, and failing to foster cooperation among key arms of government. According to them, allowing such conduct to continue unchecked would weaken democratic accountability.
On the other hand, allies of Governor Fubara describe the impeachment move as politically motivated, driven more by power control than genuine concern for governance. They argue that the governor was elected with a popular mandate and that attempts to remove him through legislative maneuvering undermine the will of the people. Some have also warned that impeachment could further destabilize the state and deepen divisions within its political class.
Public reaction across Rivers State has been mixed. While some citizens believe the crisis reflects the failure of political leaders to prioritize public interest, others fear the consequences of prolonged instability. Civil society groups have called for restraint, dialogue, and respect for democratic principles, urging all parties to put the welfare of residents above political rivalries.
National attention is once again focused on Rivers, with observers warning that how the crisis is handled could set important precedents for federal-state relations and internal party conflicts across Nigeria. There are also concerns about the economic implications, given Rivers State’s strategic importance to the nation’s oil and gas sector.
As the impeachment process unfolds, the coming weeks will be critical. Whether the proceedings lead to reconciliation, removal, or further legal battles remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Rivers State stands at another defining moment in its political history, one that will test the resilience of its democratic institutions and the maturity of its political leadership.
For residents of the state, the hope remains that whichever path is taken, it will ultimately lead to stability, accountable governance, and a renewed focus on development rather than endless political confrontation.
