New details have emerged in the case surrounding the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba.
According to court documents, Mohbad had formally withdrawn his assault complaint against his former label boss, Abdulazeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, in October 2022.
The complaint, which was lodged at the Ilasan Police Station in the Lekki area of Lagos State, was withdrawn after Mohbad claimed that the matter had been settled amicably.
This development was revealed in the legal advice signed by Babajide Martins, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Lagos State.
The DPP’s legal advice, which was obtained by the media, stated that Mohbad had initially reported the assault incident to the police on October 8, 2022.
However, just three days later, on October 11, 2022, Mohbad withdrew the complaint, citing an amicable resolution.
Here is the statement as written in the document released by Babajide Martins:
“This office is unable to act on the complaint of assault the deceased lodged against Naira Marley at the Ilasan Police Station in respect of an assault he underwent in the hand of Naira Marley on 8th October 2022 as the said complaint was by another letter dated 11th October 2022 withdrawn by the deceased on the ground that the matter had been settled amicably.”
The court has since cleared Naira Marley, show promoter Samson Balogun Eletu (aka Sam Larry), Mohbad’s former manager Babatunde Opere, and Ibrahim Owodunni (aka Primeboy) of any wrongdoing related to Mohbad’s death. Magistrate Ejiro Kubenje, who presided over the case, ruled that they had no case to answer.
However, the auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who administered injections to Mohbad without proper medical assessment will face prosecution for reckless and negligent acts.
The nurse, was found to have worsened Mohbad’s condition by administering injections and medications without conducting a medical assessment or reviewing his medical history.
The court also cleared Primeboy of any wrongdoing in a separate incident, where Mohbad had allegedly punched him repeatedly inside a vehicle.
As stated by the DPP; “Because of the refusal of Owodunni Ibrahim (Aka Primeboy) to allow the deceased to alight from the vehicle, the deceased dealt several fist blows on Primeboy who did not retaliate. It was while punching Primeboy that the deceased hit the glass of the vehicle, cut himself in the arm and sustained an injury in the right arm. This injury in the coming days bled profusely, caused the deceased severe discomfort and became swollen,”
The incident occurred on September 10, 2023, at a concert, where Mohbad had attempted to alight from the vehicle despite Primeboy’s efforts to stop him.
With this new development, the focus of the investigation has shifted to the auxiliary nurse, who will face prosecution for her role in Mohbad’s death.
