Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), extended birthday wishes to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf while recalling his long history of political mentorship and support. Kwankwaso, who has also served as a senator and federal minister, posted the message on social media amid reports that Governor Yusuf might leave the NNPP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his greeting, Kwankwaso highlighted their shared political journey, noting that Governor Yusuf started as his personal assistant during his first term, later served as his minister, then principal private assistant, followed by a stint as commissioner during Kwankwaso’s second term, and now holds the office of governor.
The birthday message has sparked a range of reactions online. Supporters like Jamilu Sufi praised Yusuf’s loyalty, writing that the governor’s rise “reflects deep mentorship and trust” and urged him to remain steadfast in his alliance with Kwankwaso. Others, like Yana, commended Yusuf as a key figure in Kano’s development. However, some voices, including Mu’azu Anas, criticized Kwankwaso for projecting himself as the state’s ultimate champion, suggesting that such rhetoric can alienate others who also care about Kano’s progress.
Meanwhile, rumors of defections within Kano politics have intensified. Speculation that Governor Yusuf might leave the NNPP for the APC has fueled tensions, although Kwankwaso and his allies in the Kwankwasiyya movement have denied reports of their own defections. To consolidate loyalty within the party, Kwankwaso reportedly opened a “loyalty register” at his residence in Kano to record officials and support groups committed to staying with the NNPP.
Political alignments in the state appear divided. While Kwankwaso retains the backing of several federal lawmakers and a senator, Governor Yusuf reportedly has the support of most members of the Kano House of Representatives. Observers suggest that Yusuf’s potential defection is motivated by a desire for greater autonomy in managing Kano’s development. Critics, however, view the move as a betrayal of longstanding political ties.
Kwankwaso has cautioned opponents not to underestimate the NNPP, asserting that the party remains strong and well-prepared for the 2027 elections. He emphasized that the NNPP’s resilience is often overlooked by those unfamiliar with Nigerian political dynamics and encouraged supporters to remain focused.
The political rift between Kwankwaso and Yusuf has raised questions about the influence of mentorship and godfatherism in Kano politics, highlighting the challenges facing the NNPP as it navigates internal divisions and prepares for future elections.
