Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer for Nnamdi Kanu, has warned that the continued imprisonment of the IPOB leader could have a major impact on the 2027 general elections in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre after being convicted on terrorism-related charges.

His detention has remained a sensitive and highly debated issue among many Ndigbo.

Ejimakor said that for the people of the South-East, Kanu’s case is more than a legal matter; it has become a symbol of justice and fairness. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), the lawyer explained that until what he called “sound justice” is achieved, Kanu’s situation will continue to dominate public discussion in the region.

He also noted that political leaders in the South-East cannot ignore the matter. “Whether you admit it or not, his incarceration will significantly affect the general elections, especially in the South-East, where mighty politicians will fall or rise on account of it,” Ejimakor wrote.

According to him, voters are closely watching how politicians respond to Kanu’s detention, and this could determine their support at the polls. Some politicians who are seen as taking the right steps may gain favor, while others who are perceived as ignoring the issue could lose influence.

Political analysts believe that Kanu’s detention has become a key factor in South-East politics. Many see it as a test of leadership, with the electorate paying close attention to which leaders stand for justice and which appear indifferent.

The IPOB lawyer urged the government and the judiciary to ensure transparency and fairness in handling Kanu’s case, saying that resolving it could reduce tension and help create a more stable political environment ahead of the 2027 elections.

As Nigeria prepares for the next general elections, the debate over Kanu’s imprisonment continues to be a focal point in the South-East, highlighting the intersection of justice, politics, and public opinion in the region.
