Obinna Iyiegbu, well known as Obi Cubana, is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, people developer, business leadership consultant, and founder and CEO of the Cubana group – a conglomerate with interests in the entertainment, hospitality and real estate business who got into the spotlight in July 2021  when he hosted an ostentatious burial to honour his late mother,  late Mrs Ezinne Iyiegbu in his country home at Oba, where over 200 cows were slaughtered.

The ambitious businessman whose name Cubana transcended its origins to become a cultural symbol in Nigeria, representing wealth, extravagance, and unparalleled luxury had no idea that a heartfelt tribute to his late mother would elevate his fame to new heights, making him the most talked-about billionaire in Nigeria then.

How Obi Cubana Came Into Limelight

In July 2021, the Anambra-born club owner threw a humungous burial for his late mother, Mrs Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Anambra State, which set a lot of tongues wagging following the lavish display of wealth.

He was said to have received 346 Cows, 72 Goats, and 20 from his friends, employees, and those he supported through life. For instance, he got 46 cows from his former employee Pascal Okechukwu, the Cubana Chief priest, and 10 cows from his old-time friend and young billionaire Jowi Zaza.

In addition, he also received from his friends a gold-plated casket for his late mother, estimated at $73,000. The socialite also had a diamond pendant made for his late mother, which he said had to replicate his mother’s face. His friends and business partners saved over $648,646 for the funeral.

Obi Cubana’s background

Born in April 1975 into the family of Sir Alex and Mrs Ezinne Iyiegbu, who were renowned educationists,  the businessman was educated at the prestigious Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from where he graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science (Second Class Upper) Honours degree in Politica “Science.”

As a young man, the Nigerian tycoon began practising the entrepreneurial skills he learned from his parents while studying at UNN, he ran a small business to cover his fees and bills and to save for future endeavours. Following his graduation, the mandatory National Youth Service took Obi Cubana to Abuja, where he served at the National Assembly for his primary assignment; on completion of his national service, Obinna, like his peers, experienced a period of unemployment – during which he struggled to make ends meet.

Undeterred but determined to make a life of success, the young Obinna opted to become self–employed, focusing on entrepreneurship, after which he started an interior design business and expanded his network within the entertainment industry.

From Rags To Wealth

In 2001, he teamed up with a childhood friend to create his first business – a relaxation garden. However, following the forced closure of his garden by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the resilient Obi Cubana picked himself up, licked his wounds and moved on.   Obi Cubana disclosed in an interview that he made his first one million naira during his National Youth Service Corps days at the National Assembly in Abuja.

According to him, he was introduced to the real estate business in Abuja, where he met a client who wanted to furnish a house.
