Federal Government Orders Agencies to Give Jobs to Persons With DisabilitiesThe Federal Government has directed all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to obey the law that says at least 5% of their jobs must be given to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The directive was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities event in Abuja. He was represented by a Permanent Secretary, Engr. Nadungu Gagare.

Akume said Nigeria has now entered a stage where disability rights must be fully enforced. He noted that the five-year period given after the signing of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act in 2018 has ended, meaning the law must now be fully followed.

He said public places, transportation systems, and service centres must be made accessible so that PWDs can use them without difficulty.

Akume urged the private sector to join in making Nigeria more inclusive, saying disability inclusion is not charity but smart business. According to him, employing PWDs gives companies more ideas, more talent, and better results.

He stressed that PWDs are not asking for pity but for opportunity. He added that disability does not mean inability, and many Nigerians living with disabilities already excel in business, technology, education, and public service.

He called on organisations to:

Employ qualified persons with disabilities to meet the 5% quota.

Provide accessible work tools and friendly workplaces.

Support businesses owned by PWDs and give them leadership opportunities.

Akume said inclusion must be reflected in hiring decisions, budgeting, planning, and everyday attitudes. He emphasised that Nigeria cannot fully grow if it pushes capable people aside.

He also praised organisers of the forum for helping Nigeria move closer to a society where everyone regardless of disability can participate and contribute meaningfully.
