The recent appointment of Eric Chelle as Head Coach of the Super Eagles has generated mixed reactions, sparking debates over the rationale behind the decision.

Former NFF President and current CAF and FIFA Executive Committee member Amaju Pinnick has offered a detailed perspective, emphasizing merit as the basis for the decision, rather than superficial or biased considerations.

Pinnick disclosed that extensive research into Chelle’s professional credentials preceded his appointment. He noted that much of the criticism surrounding the decision appears rooted in misconceptions and racial prejudice, rather than an objective evaluation of Chelle’s competence.

Highlighting Chelle’s remarkable tenure in Mali, Pinnick pointed to the coach’s impressive record, which includes 14 wins, 5 draws, and only 3 losses in 22 games. This track record, Pinnick argued, reflects Chelle’s offensive-minded coaching style—a philosophy that aligns seamlessly with Nigeria’s traditional attacking approach to football.

Pinnick described Chelle’s appointment as a strategic step toward ensuring the Super Eagles’ long-term success. By bringing in a coach with a proven ability to deliver consistent and attacking football, Nigeria is setting the stage for stronger performances on the global stage.
