Kingsley Chinda, a member of the House of Representatives and a known ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has successfully passed the screening exercise of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The clearance qualifies him to participate in the party’s governorship primary in Rivers State.

The development marks a significant step in Chinda’s political move as he positions himself for the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State.

His entry has further strengthened the list of contenders seeking the APC ticket for the upcoming election cycle.

With his entry into the race, Chinda is now expected to contest for the APC governorship ticket alongside other aspirants, including the sitting governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The race is seen as a major political battle within the party.

Although Wike has not officially named any candidate he supports, political observers believe Chinda may have an advantage if he eventually receives Wike’s backing.

Wike is considered a key political figure in Rivers State politics and his influence is seen as important in the upcoming primary.

Wike has also previously made it clear that he does not support Governor Fubara’s re-election bid.

He has stated that he will announce his preferred candidate at the appropriate time, which has further increased political tension and interest in the party’s primary election scheduled for May 21.

Political analysts say the APC primary in Rivers State is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The involvement of high-profile figures like Chinda and Fubara has intensified attention within and outside the party.

Party stakeholders are also reportedly divided over zoning arrangements and the choice of candidate, with different blocs pushing for individuals they believe can strengthen the party’s chances in the state. This has added to existing internal disagreements.

Meanwhile, supporters of the various aspirants have begun early mobilization across local government areas, with political meetings and consultations increasing as the primary date approaches.

The build-up is expected to further heighten competition within the party.

Security and electoral observers are also monitoring the situation closely, as Rivers State has a history of highly competitive and sometimes tense political contests.

Efforts are being made by party leaders to ensure a peaceful and transparent primary election process.

As the primary election draws closer, there are expectations that more consultations will take place among key political actors in the state to reduce tensions and possibly build consensus around a strong candidate for the APC.

Some party leaders are also reportedly exploring reconciliation efforts among rival camps.

Observers believe the outcome of the APC primary in Rivers State could significantly shape the political direction of the state ahead of the 2027 governorship election, especially given the influence of major political figures involved in the contest.
