ADC Says Removing Tinubu Is Key to Ending Nigeria’s Governance Crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared that removing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office is essential to rescuing Nigeria from what it describes as an unprecedented governance crisis. The party made this position public through its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, who spoke during a televised political programme on Friday.

According to Abdullahi, the ADC believes Nigeria cannot experience meaningful recovery or progress while the current administration remains in power. He stated that the party’s agenda going into the next election cycle is firmly focused on ending Tinubu’s tenure through democratic means, insisting that there is no scenario in which the president remains in office and the country is able to overcome its present challenges.

The ADC spokesperson argued that Nigeria is facing deep-rooted problems across multiple sectors, including governance, accountability, and public trust. He described the situation as one of the most difficult periods in the country’s democratic history, claiming that the administration’s decisions and conduct have worsened national hardship rather than alleviating it.
Abdullahi also criticised what he described as a pattern of governance that prioritises political interests over the welfare of Nigerians. He accused the federal government of operating without sufficient transparency and accountability, raising concerns about decisions taken by the administration that, in his view, undermine democratic norms and the rule of law.
Among the issues highlighted were allegations of questionable handling of legislative processes, concerns over public spending on foreign lobbying efforts, and a lack of clarity surrounding international agreements entered into by the government.

Abdullahi argued that resources spent on external image management should instead be directed toward addressing insecurity, economic hardship, and declining living standards within the country.

The ADC’s statement places the 2027 general elections at the centre of its political strategy. The party maintains that its objective is not driven by personal ambition but by what it considers the national interest, stressing that leadership change is necessary to restore confidence in governance and redirect the country toward stability and development.
While the party’s comments have sparked debate, it is important to note that Nigeria’s constitution provides clear legal processes for removing a sitting president. Outside of elections, such removal can only occur through lawful mechanisms such as impeachment by the National Assembly. As such, the ADC’s declaration is widely viewed as a political position aimed at mobilising support ahead of future elections rather than an immediate constitutional action.

In conclusion, the African Democratic Congress has drawn a clear line in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape by asserting that President Tinubu’s removal from office is critical to resolving the nation’s governance crisis. As the country moves closer to the next election cycle, statements such as these underscore the growing tension between the ruling administration and opposition parties over Nigeria’s direction and future leadership.
