Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Wednesday reinforced the importance of traditional institutions in governance by presenting 65 brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to the state’s traditional rulers. He described the gesture as a strategic investment aimed at promoting peace, stability, and effective grassroots administration.
The handover, which took place at the Government House in Asaba, involved 60 Toyota Prado SUVs and five Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, distributed to royal fathers from various kingdoms and councils across Delta State. The governor emphasized that the vehicles were intended as “tools of service,” not privileges, to enhance the ability of traditional rulers to fulfill their duties.
Governor Oborevwori called the occasion “a very important and symbolic day” for his administration, highlighting the unique and often understated role of traditional rulers in governance. Drawing on his extensive experience in grassroots politics, he noted that royal fathers occupy a crucial position within the state’s governance framework.
“They are not just custodians of our culture and traditions; they serve as vital intermediaries between government and the people at the grassroots,” he said, adding that government policies and programs gain acceptance largely through the guidance and cooperation of these leaders, particularly in rural areas.
The governor commended the traditional rulers for their ongoing support, acknowledging their roles in conflict resolution, community mobilization, and peacebuilding. According to him, the institution has been a stabilizing force, fostering harmony in communities despite social and economic challenges.
“I can confidently say that traditional rulers have made governance more effective in Delta State. Their dedication to peace, progress, and prosperity deserves recognition,” Oborevwori stated.
He further highlighted that many traditional rulers work quietly behind the scenes, mediating disputes, promoting government initiatives, and assisting security agencies without expecting acknowledgment or reward. Their responsibilities often require extensive travel, especially in rural and riverine areas.
“Our royal fathers frequently respond to government directives, mediate conflicts, and engage in peace-building voluntarily. For this, we are truly grateful,” the governor added.
Oborevwori explained that the choice of durable SUVs was intentional, designed to meet the challenges of the terrains in which many traditional rulers operate. He stressed that functionality and resilience, rather than luxury, guided the selection of the vehicles.
“These vehicles are not luxury items; they are service tools built for strength, durability, and practicality,” he said.
Beyond the vehicle presentation, the governor highlighted social intervention programs already underway, including grants for petty traders and artisans, empowerment initiatives for women and youths, and monthly stipends for 10,000 widows to ease economic hardship. He also noted achievements in workers’ welfare, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, settlement of outstanding gratuities, scholarships and bursaries for students, and financial support for Delta indigenes attending Nigerian Law Schools.
Observers say the SUV presentation underscores the evolving role of traditional institutions in contemporary governance. While elected officials hold constitutional authority, traditional rulers wield moral influence and social sway that can significantly affect grassroots policy implementation.
By equipping royal fathers with essential logistics, the Oborevwori administration is promoting a collaborative governance model that combines formal political structures with traditional leadership. The initiative is widely seen as a practical step toward sustaining peace, enhancing community engagement, and accelerating development in Delta State.
Ultimately, the event reinforced a key message: governance is most effective when all layers of leadership both modern and traditionals are empowered to serve the people efficiently.
