The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday night recorded a hard-fought 2–1 victory over the Taifa Stars of Tanzania to kick off their campaign on a winning note.
Nigeria took the lead in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi rose highest to meet a well-delivered cross from Alex Iwobi, powering his header into the net to give the Eagles the advantage before the break.
Tanzania came out stronger in the second half and were rewarded moments after the restart when striker Kokola Mbwa found the equaliser for the East Africans, briefly bringing them back into the game.
However, Nigeria responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored the Super Eagles’ lead with a fine finish, making it 2–1 in favour of the three-time African champions.
Both sides pushed for more goals as the match progressed but failed to convert several scoring chances, leaving the scoreline unchanged until the final whistle.
The victory earned Nigeria all three points from the encounter, with defender Semi Ajayi deservedly named Man of the Match for his commanding performance at the back and his decisive opening goal.
The Super Eagles will next face Tunisia on Friday in Fez as they continue their quest for continental glory.
