Nationwide Anxiety Grows Over Possible 40% Telecom Tariff Hike in Nigeria

As the New Year unfolds, Nigerians are gripped by concerns over a potential 40 percent hike in telecommunications service tariffs.

The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has strongly opposed the proposed increase, calling it insensitive amidst the country’s worsening economic hardship.

Recent speculation suggests that telecom operators, including MTN, Glo, and Airtel, might implement a 40 percent price increase across their services.

For instance, a data bundle currently priced at ₦1,000 could rise to ₦1,400 under the new regime reportedly set to take effect in 2025.

However, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has dismissed these claims, stating that no such tariff adjustment has been approved.

The controversy comes on the heels of telecom operators’ warnings of a potential service shutdown if their requests for tariff reviews continue to be denied. Last year, the NCC firmly rejected similar demands for a tariff hike, adding to the tension between regulators and service providers.

As the situation unfolds, subscribers and industry stakeholders are closely watching for official confirmation or resolution to the ongoing tariff dispute.
