2027: ADC May Bar Candidates Above 55, Says Factional Chairman Nafiu Bala

The factional chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, has said the party may not allow anyone older than 55 to contest in the 2027 general elections.

He said this in an interview with BBC Hausa, explaining that the decision is to give younger Nigerians a chance to lead.

According to him, many of the new members joining the party are quite old, some in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. He believes it is time for youths to take over leadership roles.

Bala also dismissed claims that he is being used by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections. He described the allegations as false.

The ADC is currently facing a leadership crisis, with different groups claiming control of the party. This has caused more division, especially after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to recognise any faction.

Speaking on a reconciliation meeting reportedly called by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Bala said he did not attend because he had more important engagements. He also questioned Kwankwaso’s authority to call such a meeting, saying he is not a legitimate member of the ADC.

Bala insisted that the solution to the party’s crisis is for members to follow the party’s constitution and proper procedures.

He also asked party members to accept his leadership, despite criticisms about his age and background. He said leadership is given by God and promised to ensure fairness if supported.
