Ecuador is set to witness a significant political shift as businessman Daniel Noboa, at the age of 35, is poised to become the country’s youngest president in history.

Emerging victorious with 52.3% of the vote in Sunday’s election, Mr. Noboa’s win marks a momentous milestone for the National Democratic Action party.

His opponent, Luisa González, graciously accepted the election results, extending her congratulations to the incoming president. The youthful leader’s political lineage is rooted in his father, Álvaro Noboa, a five-time unsuccessful presidential candidate.

However, Mr. Noboa’s term will be relatively short-lived, spanning merely 17 months, until the subsequent election.

This interim period was triggered by the premature dissolution of parliament by outgoing President Guillermo Lasso amidst an impeachment trial.

Looking ahead, the incoming president, who will assume office at the end of November 2023, will serve until May 2025. Interestingly, Mr. Noboa retains the option to vie for the 2025-2029 presidential term if he decides to pursue re-election.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 25th November, five days before Mr. Noboa’s 36th birthday, promising a youthful and potentially transformative leadership for the country.

Following his win in the second round of voting, Mr Noboa told supporters:

“Tomorrow we start work for this new Ecuador, we start working to rebuild a country seriously battered by violence, by corruption and by hate.”

In recent years, Ecuador has faced a surge in gang-related violence, casting a shadow over the presidential campaign, exacerbated by the tragic assassination of journalist Fernando Villavicencio in August. Notably, Villavicencio had actively crusaded against corruption, leaving an indelible mark on the electoral landscape.

Furthermore, the nation has witnessed a stark uptick in violent crime, fostering Ecuador’s transformation into a focal point for drug cartels due to its strategic location between Colombia and Peru, the world’s two leading cocaine producers.

Addressing these challenges, Mr. Noboa has proposed relocating some of the country’s most entrenched criminals to prison vessels off the Ecuadorean coastline, aiming to dismantle the prison gangs responsible for internal bloodshed.

Additionally, he advocates fortifying security measures at Ecuador’s borders and ports to disrupt critical drug-trafficking networks, proposing the implementation of advanced scanning technologies to enhance the interception of cocaine shipments.

In an effort to resonate with the electorate, Mr. Noboa has also pledged to enhance employment opportunities, signaling his commitment to address both security concerns and economic development.
