Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored a dramatic late winner as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia in their World Cup Group E clash.
The match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw before Amad, who started the game on the bench, made the difference in the closing moments. In the 90th minute, Wilfried Singo made a powerful run down the right side and delivered a pass into the penalty area.
Amad reacted quickly, opening up his body before guiding a superb left-footed finish into the bottom corner to give Ivory Coast a famous victory.
The goal not only secured all three points for the African side but also ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run, which had lasted for almost two years. The result gives Ivory Coast a strong chance of progressing from Group E, which also includes Germany and Curacao, and reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.
Ecuador created several good chances throughout the game and were unfortunate not to score. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar during the first half, while experienced striker Enner Valencia hit the post from a difficult angle after the break.
Ivory Coast also came close to taking the lead earlier in the second half when forward Elye Wahi saw his effort crash against the crossbar. Both teams showed attacking intent, but strong defending and goalkeeping kept the score level for most of the match.
Ecuador did not register a shot on target until the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata forced Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into making an important save. Despite enjoying periods of possession and creating opportunities, the South American side could not find a way past the Ivorian defence.
Just when it seemed Ecuador had done enough to earn a point, Amad Diallo produced a moment of quality to settle the contest. His late strike ensured Ivory Coast began their World Cup campaign with a memorable victory and a huge boost in their bid to qualify for the next round.
