Tinubu Makes U-Turn, Withdraws Turkey Ambassador Posting

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has withdrawn the posting of a former Kebbi State governor as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Turkey, reversing an earlier announcement by the presidency and triggering fresh discussion about ongoing diplomatic reviews under his administration.

The initial announcement, made through an official State House statement, listed the former governor among four ambassador-designates assigned to key countries including the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Turkey. The Turkey posting, in particular, drew attention because it came shortly before President Tinubu’s planned diplomatic engagements with Ankara.

However, less than 24 hours later, the presidency issued a clarification, confirming that the Turkey posting had been withdrawn and placed under review, and that no ambassador has been formally designated to Turkey at this time. The revised statement confirmed only three ambassadorial postings, effectively removing Turkey from the updated list.

While no detailed explanation was offered for the reversal, government sources described it as a corrective step aimed at preventing diplomatic miscommunication. The move suggests that the earlier announcement may have been premature or inconsistent with the final list of ambassadorial nominees approved by the Senate in December.

The development comes amid a broader effort by the Tinubu administration to restore Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad after several missions operated for years without substantive ambassadors. Since assuming office, the president has emphasized the need for strategic, well-considered foreign postings that align with Nigeria’s economic and geopolitical priorities.

Observers note that the swift reversal reflects an attempt by the presidency to maintain procedural accuracy and avoid international embarrassment, particularly in sensitive bilateral relationships. It also highlights the cautious approach being taken as the government gradually rolls out ambassadorial assignments rather than announcing all postings at once.

Although the Turkey position remains vacant for now, officials indicate that further postings will be announced after internal reviews are completed. The episode underscores the evolving nature of Nigeria’s diplomatic reset under President Tinubu one marked by active engagement, but also by recalibration where necessary.
