President Bola Tinubu has appointed Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the adviser and coordinator of his administration’s livestock reforms initiative.
The announcement was made on Friday, March 7, by Bayo Onanuga, presidential adviser on information and strategy.Jega’s new role signals a renewed push to revamp Nigeria’s livestock sector, which has faced decades of neglect and persistent conflicts between herders and farmers.
Prior to this appointment, he served as co-chair of the presidential livestock reforms implementation committee.
Tinubu has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to transforming livestock farming into a commercialized and sustainable industry.
In 2023, he approved the creation of a livestock reforms committee to address key challenges in the sector, including farmer-herder clashes and dairy production inefficiencies.
The committee was established following recommendations from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Conflict Mitigation, which highlighted the urgent need for policy-driven solutions to modernize the industry.
Jega’s appointment is expected to accelerate efforts toward achieving these reforms.
