Political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are gradually gaining momentum as support groups, party loyalists, and regional political movements begin early mobilization across different parts of the country.

One of the latest signs of this growing political season emerged in Ekiti State, where the South West Agenda for Asiwaju, popularly known as SWAGA, publicly declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji ahead of the next round of elections.
The endorsement, which took place during a gathering in Ado Ekiti, drew political stakeholders, party supporters, youth mobilizers, and grassroots organizers from across the South-West region. Leaders of the group described their support as a continuation of the political movement that contributed to Tinubu’s emergence as president in 2023.

SWAGA first became nationally recognized during the intense political buildup to the 2023 presidential election. The group positioned itself as one of the major grassroots organizations promoting Tinubu’s presidential ambition across the South-West and other regions of the country. Its activities included consultations, rallies, town hall engagements, and strategic mobilization among party members and community leaders.

Now, with 2027 still some distance away, the organization appears determined to revive its structures and influence. Supporters at the Ekiti gathering argued that Tinubu’s economic reforms and political direction require continuity, while Governor Oyebanji’s leadership in Ekiti deserves another term.

The meeting reflected the growing reality that Nigerian politics rarely waits until election year before alliances and campaigns begin to take shape. Although official campaigns are still far off, political actors are already laying foundations, building networks, and testing public sentiment.

During the event, speakers praised Tinubu’s administration for pursuing reforms they described as difficult but necessary. They pointed to policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate adjustments, and ongoing infrastructure projects as evidence of a government attempting to reposition the economy despite current hardship.

Supporters insisted that while many Nigerians are struggling with inflation and rising living costs, the administration deserves time to fully implement its agenda. According to them, economic recovery and long-term stability require patience and political consistency.

The endorsement also highlighted the strategic importance of the South-West region in national politics. The region has historically played a decisive role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, producing influential political leaders and serving as a strong base for major political movements.

For Tinubu, maintaining strong support within the South-West remains politically significant. Analysts believe that sustaining loyalty in his home region could become one of the pillars of any future re-election effort. Political groups such as SWAGA are therefore seen as more than symbolic organizations; they represent grassroots machinery capable of influencing voter mobilization and political narratives.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji also received strong praise during the gathering. Organizers described his administration as stable, accessible, and focused on development. They cited projects in road construction, education, agriculture, and public sector management as reasons for supporting his continuation in office.

Oyebanji, who has maintained close political ties with Tinubu and key leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, has often emphasized unity and collaboration within the party. Observers believe this political alignment has strengthened his standing among influential APC stakeholders both within and outside Ekiti State.

However, despite the enthusiasm displayed at the endorsement event, reactions across the country remain mixed regarding early political campaigns. Critics argue that political leaders should focus more on addressing pressing national challenges rather than discussing future elections.

Nigeria continues to battle inflation, unemployment, insecurity, foreign exchange instability, and rising public frustration over economic hardship. For many citizens, daily survival remains the dominant concern. As a result, discussions about 2027 have already triggered debates about priorities and governance.

Opposition voices have accused ruling party supporters of attempting to shift attention away from the current realities facing ordinary Nigerians. Some critics insist that endorsements and political rallies risk appearing disconnected from public hardship.

Still, supporters of the president maintain that politics and governance naturally overlap in democratic systems. They argue that political organizations have the right to express support, mobilize followers, and prepare early strategies ahead of future elections.

The emergence of early endorsements also reflects the changing nature of Nigerian political culture, where continuous campaigning has become increasingly common. Political actors now rely heavily on media visibility, grassroots engagement, and public perception management throughout their time in office rather than only during election periods.

Social media has further accelerated this trend. Political conversations now happen daily across digital platforms, making it difficult to separate governance from campaign messaging. Every policy decision, public appearance, or endorsement often becomes part of a larger political narrative.

Within the APC itself, the growing public support for Tinubu may also serve another purpose: discouraging internal divisions. Nigerian political parties have historically experienced internal conflicts ahead of elections, especially when questions about endorsements and second-term ambitions arise.

By publicly rallying around Tinubu early, groups like SWAGA may be attempting to project unity and reduce speculation about possible cracks within the ruling party. Such public displays of loyalty often carry symbolic importance in Nigeria’s highly competitive political environment.

At the same time, opposition parties are also expected to intensify consultations and alliance-building efforts in the coming months. The political atmosphere ahead of 2027 is likely to become increasingly active as different camps seek relevance, visibility, and influence.

For now, the SWAGA endorsement event serves as another reminder that Nigeria’s political season is already quietly unfolding, even years before voters head to the polls. Whether these early mobilizations will translate into future electoral success remains uncertain, but they clearly signal the beginning of another major political cycle.

As Nigerians continue to navigate economic pressures and national challenges, political leaders face the difficult task of balancing governance with growing political expectations

. Support groups may continue organizing endorsements and rallies, but public opinion will ultimately depend on how citizens judge leadership, performance, and everyday realities in the years ahead.
