The Southern Political Progressives Amalgamation Forum has advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to approach the selection of its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election with caution, stressing that the decision could play a decisive role in the party’s chances of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement jointly signed by Comrades Anga Fidelis, Eniafe Ayomide, and Johnson Iheanacho, the Forum urged the opposition party to nominate a running mate with strong electoral value and widespread acceptance across Southern Nigeria.
The appeal follows reports indicating that former Minister of Transportation and immediate past Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, is being considered as the running mate to the ADC’s presumed presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
According to the Forum, the party should focus on presenting a balanced ticket capable of attracting support from all six geopolitical zones. It maintained that the vice-presidential nominee should possess national appeal, extensive political experience, grassroots support, and qualities that would effectively complement the party’s presidential candidate.
The group described the choice of a running mate as one of the most significant strategic decisions ahead of the 2027 elections, noting that the right candidate could strengthen the ADC’s electoral prospects and broaden its nationwide appeal.
It also encouraged the party’s leadership to foster unity within its ranks and make decisions that would inspire confidence among members, supporters, and potential allies.
The Forum further stressed the importance of building a broad coalition that cuts across regional, political, and interest groups, arguing that such an alliance would be vital if the ADC intends to mount a formidable challenge against the APC.
Expressing optimism about the party’s chances, the group said the ADC could enhance its prospects in the 2027 presidential race by presenting a united front and fielding a ticket that reflects inclusiveness and enjoys broad public support.
As of the time the statement was issued, neither the ADC nor Rotimi Amaechi had responded publicly to the Forum’s recommendations.
