The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Zacch Adedeji as the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The decision, reached by a majority vote during the plenary session on Tuesday, marks a critical step forward in the leadership of the nation’s tax collection agency.
Prior to the confirmation, Adedeji underwent rigorous screening by the Senate, demonstrating his capability and vision for the role. In a compelling address, he emphasized his commitment to enhancing the agency’s data mining capabilities, underscoring the need for robust information gathering to facilitate informed tax-related decisions.
During his speech, Adedeji shed light on the existing challenges in the tax collection system, pinpointing the pervasive issue of revenue leakages. He specifically highlighted the dearth of comprehensive data concerning the financial activities of both local and foreign corporations operating within the country. This, he claimed, has significantly contributed to the longstanding problem of revenue loss.
He said,
“We will improve our data mining capacity. We will develop the data upon which will we make decisions on taxes.”
