The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the OKAY A New Nigeria Movement has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the reported death of Mary Habila, a nurse said to have died at a residence associated with the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
The group made the demand during a press briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, where its State Chairman, Hon. Mathew Chinedu Chukwuemeka, urged the relevant security and judicial authorities to conduct an independent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.
According to the movement, the reported death has generated public concern and deserves careful scrutiny to establish the facts. The group stressed that a transparent investigation would not only provide answers to the deceased’s family but also strengthen public confidence in the country’s justice system.
Expressing sympathy to the family of the late Mary Habila, the organisation maintained that every Nigerian deserves equal protection under the law, regardless of where an incident occurs or the status of those connected to it. It argued that openness and accountability are essential in cases that attract widespread public attention.
Beyond the issue of Habila’s death, the movement also raised concerns over allegations it referenced involving the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Adeniyi Adeyemi in relation to an organisation identified as PFIPC. While noting that the allegations remain unproven, the group urged the Presidency to allow an independent investigation to take its course.
The organisation said asking public officials to temporarily step aside during investigations is a practice that can help protect the credibility of the investigative process and reassure Nigerians that no one is above the law. It maintained that transparency remains a vital ingredient for strengthening democratic institutions and public trust.
Hon. Chinedu stated that Nigerians have become increasingly concerned about accountability in public office and called on relevant authorities to ensure that every allegation is investigated fairly and professionally without political interference.
The movement further argued that government institutions must continue to demonstrate commitment to justice by allowing law enforcement agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour. According to the group, transparent investigations help preserve confidence in governance and reinforce the rule of law.
Addressing the country’s security situation, the organisation expressed concern over what it described as the continued rise in cases of kidnapping, violent crimes and general insecurity across different parts of Nigeria. It noted that the safety of lives and property remains one of the primary responsibilities of government and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle criminal activities.
The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve coordination among security agencies and implement strategies capable of reducing violent crimes nationwide. It said restoring public confidence in the nation’s security architecture should remain a top priority.
According to the movement, insecurity continues to affect businesses, farming activities and economic development, while many communities still live in fear due to criminal attacks. It urged government at all levels to work closely with local communities in addressing emerging security challenges.
The organisation also stated that citizens would ultimately assess the performance of elected leaders based on their ability to improve security, strengthen the economy and deliver good governance. It maintained that democratic accountability allows Nigerians to express their judgment through the ballot box during elections.
On the political front, the movement announced its endorsement of the presidential ticket of Mr. Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to the group, the ticket represents what it described as a credible alternative capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges. It expressed confidence that the combination of the two political figures would provide leadership focused on national unity, development and inclusive governance.
The movement called on Nigerians to support the ticket, arguing that the country requires leaders committed to tackling poverty, unemployment, insecurity and institutional reforms. It said the endorsement reflected its assessment of the political direction it believes would best serve the country’s interests.
Members of the organisation also congratulated Mr. Peter Obi on his birthday, commending what they described as his consistency in advocating for accountability, good governance and responsible leadership despite political challenges.
The group praised Obi for remaining active in national discourse and encouraging citizens to participate in democratic processes. It expressed optimism about his political future while urging Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding in expressing their political preferences.
Throughout the briefing, Hon. Chinedu reiterated that the movement’s demands were driven by its commitment to justice, transparency and responsible governance rather than political confrontation. He maintained that institutions must be allowed to function independently and investigate issues of public interest without undue influence.
He further stated that public confidence in government can only be sustained when authorities respond promptly to concerns raised by citizens and ensure that justice is administered fairly. According to him, accountability should remain a guiding principle for everyone occupying public office.
The movement concluded by calling on government officials, law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities to uphold the rule of law in handling matters of national importance. It maintained that transparent governance, effective security and respect for democratic principles remain essential for Nigeria’s progress.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from the Ministry of Works, the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President or the Presidency regarding the movement’s demands. Likewise, the allegations referenced by the group had not been established in court, and no findings from any official investigation had been announced.
