The Marine Police Unit of the Lagos State Police Command has rescued a 23-year-old man, Joshua Babalola, after he jumped into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge in an apparent suicide attempt.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026. Police officers received a report that a young man had fallen into the lagoon and quickly responded to the scene.
With the help of local fishermen, the marine police successfully rescued Babalola alive.
After the rescue, Babalola told authorities that he works as a painter and lives in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State. He said he travelled to Lagos without informing anyone.
According to him, he decided to jump into the lagoon because he was struggling with financial problems and felt hopeless. He also said his mobile phone was lost in the water.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident. She said Babalola received medical attention and is currently in police care while efforts are being made to contact his family.
Adebisi noted that he is the second person rescued from the Lagos Lagoon in the last three months.
She urged residents to continue working closely with the police by reporting emergencies and suspicious activities promptly.
The Lagos State Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
